Rep\u00fablica de Cuba se divide en 15\u00a0provincias\u00a0y el Municipio Especial\u00a0Isla de la Juventud. Las provincias, a su vez, se dividen en\u00a0municipios, 168 en total (incluyendo el Municipio Especial).<\/p>\n<p>La creaci\u00f3n de nuevas unidades territoriales y sus l\u00edmites es materia de ley. Los cambios m\u00e1s recientes fueron aprobados por la\u00a0Asamblea Nacional\u00a0en agosto en 2010 (puestos en vigor a partir del 1 de enero de 2011), los cuales consistieron en la creaci\u00f3n de dos nuevas provincias:\u00a0Artemisa\u00a0y\u00a0Mayabeque\u00a0a partir de la segmentaci\u00f3n de la\u00a0Provincia de La Habana, junto con el traspaso de los tres municipios m\u00e1s orientales de la provincia de\u00a0Pinar del R\u00edo. Tambi\u00e9n se extingui\u00f3 el municipio de\u00a0Varadero\u00a0en la Provincia de\u00a0Matanzas, integrando su territorio al municipio de\u00a0C\u00e1rdenas.
